WBB | Leda and Gobeil duo drove Cascade's scoring to win 77-51 over the Timberwolves

Bernie Leda and Maddy Gobeil drove the Cascades in points to help secure their second win 77-51 over the University of Northern British Columbia Saturday night in Prince George.

The Cascades secure 13-5 while the Timberwolves are now at 4-12.

How It Happened:
The teams exchanged points early on and remained in a close scoring margin through out the first quarter.  Maddy Gobeil and Bernie Leda were the only players to score for UFV while UNBC had multiple shooters.  Julia Tuscherer grabbed three boards for the Cascades, and they were able to stay ahead within one as Amrit Manak snuck one in for the Timberwolves ending the first quarter 16-15.

The Cascades started to dominate in the second quarter and Leda picked up a pair of threes early on.  The play continued and Ankita Chopra checked in with a three making it 30-21.  With two minutes left in the quarter Gobeil had another three and the Cascades kept the Timberwolves within two points to finish out the quarter 41-24.

In the third quarter, the Cascades quickly gained a bigger edge with Gobeil adding on two more threes within the first minute.  Viktoriia Filatova helped the Timberwolves as she sunk six points of her own over the course of the period.  However, as the play developed the combined 12 points of Gobeil and Tuscherer brought the score to 60-35 finishing out the third quarter.

In the final quarter, the teams winded down in putting up points on the board until Charley Arnold came in with a three-point shot and a couple of free throws from Miah Schuurman which extended the lead to 67-37.  The story remained the same as the Cascades picked away at their lead.  Leda then closed out the game for UFV with a three-point shot and two free throws making it 77-47.

Viktoriia Filatova led the Timberwolves with 17 points while Brynn Dergousoff had five rebounds.

Quotable:
Head Coach Al Tuscherer
"It was a big weekend in terms of standings, so we were happy to come away with two wins.  We used last weekend and this weekend to really try and do the things we want to see come playoff time, so it has been very important for us to keep building on details and experiment."

Al Tuscherer on what comes next said "we really want to finish strong, and we haven't played our best basketball yet.  The last time we played Trinity Western University it stuck with us and the evening hasn't left our minds.  We're going to be motivated to play good basketball."

What's Next:
The Cascades have a bye next weekend but are back at the UFV Athletic Centre Friday, February 14 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, February 15 at 3 p.m. against the Trinity Western University Spartans.
