MVB: Cascades drop four-setter to Spartans on Friday's senior night

The UFV Cascades were unable to replicate their heroics from Thursday, as they dropped a four-set decision to the USPORTS No. 8 ranked Trinity Western Spartans on Friday evening.

With the result, the Cascades record moves to  to 7-11, while the Spartans improve to 11-7.

How it happened:
TWU took an early lead, going up 14-6 after a pair of blocks, and the teams played point for point for the remainder of the set as Trinity closed it out 25-16.

The Spartans continued their pressure early in the second, going up 6-1 after a Piers de Greef kill. Two straight kills from Jonas Van Huizen helped the Cascades pull back within two, but TWu once again pulled away with an Anselm Reim ace making it 17-11. After the teams traded kills, a UFV service error ended the frame 25-19 for TWU.

Back-to-back service aces from UFV's Nimo Benne put the Cascades up 5-2 early in the third. The teams would battle throughout the set to find themselves level again on 18, but Benne knocked down two more aces to give his team a 22-19 lead. A Van Huizen kill finished it off 25-21 and sent the match to a fourth set.

The teams traded blows early, but with the score level at 14, a 6-1 TWU run gave them a lead that they would not relinquish, and a de Greef kill finished off the match 25-22.

Notable:
Van Huizen led the Cascades with 15 kills on the night, while Benne had 11 kills and added six aces for UFV.

The Cascades honoured graduating players Kyle Cook, Braden White, Ryan Hampe, Tyson Ardell, Nimo Benne, and Jonas Van Huizen in a post-game ceremony on their senior night.

The top 10 teams make the CW postseason with a play-in round for the bottom four teams in week one. The eighth and seventh place teams will be hosts for the play-in matches, with nine at eight, and 10 at seven.

Up Next:
The Cascades head on the road next Friday and Saturday for a pair of matches with the UBC Thunderbirds. Both games can be seen live on Canada West TV.
