WSOC: Cascades fall to Vikes to close out opening weekend

Victoria, BC – The UFV Cascades women's soccer team came up on the losing side for the second straight day after a 5-0 loss to the University of Victoria Vikes on Saturday.

The Cascades finish their opening week road trip with an 0-2 record, while Victoria improves to 1-1 with the win.

How it happened:
A pair of early goals off set pieces gave Victoria a 2-0 lead within 20 minutes. A long free kick from the Vikes bounced in the box before Taiya Scorey got a head to it and looped it over the goalkeeper for her second of the year in the 14thminute. Four minutes later Alice Kopp was the first to the ball off an Adrianna Hilton corner kick, and her first touch found its way into the goal.

The Vikes made it 3-0 after a Ruby Nicholas long ball glanced off a Cascades defender before falling to Scarlett McNeely, who looped a shot over Cascades goalkeeper Alana Madec and into the net.

The hosts made it 4-0 just before the half, as Brianne McLeish was played in on the left wing, and after beating a defender she chipped the ball over the incoming keeper. Nicholas pushed the host's advantage to five on a penalty shot early in the second half.

UFV's Kiana Langston had the Cascades best chance of the game in the 82nd minute. Her shot from the right side of the box looped over the Vikes goalkeeper but it struck the left post solidly before bouncing along the line and staying out.

Next Up:
The Cascades return home next week for a pair of matchups with the UNBC Timberwolves. The games are set for Thursday and Friday at 5:30 p.m and can be seen live on Canada West TV.
