MSOC: Brazinha brace helps lead Cascades to wild win in Saskatoon

Saskatoon, SK – Mateo Brazinha opened the scoring for the UFV Cascades just 63 seconds in, and added a second just after halftime, as the UFV Cascades came away with a 6-2 victory over the Saskatchewan Huskies on Sunday afternoon in Saskatoon.

After going ahead 5-0 the Cascades battled through some adversity when they went down to 10-men, and saw a pair of penalty kicks called against them in the second half, but the Cascades held their nerve to pick up the win and move to 4-1-2 on the season.

Saskatchewan meanwhile sees their record fall to 2-5-1 so far this year.

How it Happened:
Mateo Brazinha got the Cascades off to a dream start just 63 seconds into the match. UFV forced a Huskies turnover that found the Cascades captain, who instantly drove towards goal and deftly slotted the ball into the net past a diving Jaron Slopinski for his sixth goal of the campaign.

Saskatchewan pushed hard, and found an opportunity in the fifteenth minute, but the Cascades defenders were able to come away with a pair of important blocks.

With just minutes remaining in the frame, the Cascades jumped on another Huskie error. Dante Colebourne's cross teased Slopinski out to punch, but he wasn't able to make contact and Adriano Consiglio found himself in the right place at the right time for a shot into the wide-open Saskatchewan net.

Just moments later, Harjoven Sidhu took advantage of another turnover, and after running half the pitch with the ball he rounded the keeper to make it 3-0 at half time.

The second half started much the same as the first, as Michael Beecroft played a tantalizing ball through to the foot of Brazinha, and he made no mistake finishing it low into the goal.

Shortly after, Beckham Hatch found Ebi Igali with a corner kick, and Igali's header glanced off the underside of the crossbar and in to make it 5-0 for UFV.

The Huskies had a glorious chance to get one back in the 60th minute, as Tao Hein was taken down in the box, but his resulting penalty kick struck the right post and stayed out.

Six minutes later the Huskies were awarded a second chance from the spot, but UFV goalkeeper Matheus De Souza would not be beat. The first year keeper dove to his right to nullify the spot kick from Malcom Rektor.

Colbourne came close to adding a sixth in the 63rd, but his powerful shut struck the crossbar and stayed just out.

Hein would finally find a breakthrough for Saskatchewan in the 70th minute. After receiving a long pass forward, he snuck past a defender before sliding his shot into the goal.

Just moments later, UFV's Igali was shown a second yellow card for a challenge just outside of the box to put UFV down to 10 men for the rest of the game.

Rektor pulled one more back for Saskatchewan in the 76th minute, but after Sidhu forced another turnover, he found Nathan Cervo in the box for his first goal of the season to seal it 6-2.

Notable:
Brazinha's two goals sees him pass Sasa Plavsic for second all-time in the Cascades record book. He now sits just one goal shy of Gurmaan Jhaj's program high mark of 22 in his career.

The Cascades shutout streak came to an end with Hein's goal in the 70th minute. The tally stops a streak of both four games, and 462 minutes and 35 seconds, since they last conceded. Over that stretch the Cascades also scored 18 goals between conceding.

Quotable:
Cascades head coach Tom Lowndes

"It's not too often that you find yourself up 5-0, and we kind of took the foot off the gas a bit and had a couple moments of madness to let them get back in and make it a bit wild with 25 minutes left. Obviously, that's something that we need to be better at but I thought we looked really clinical in the chances that we took, and it's three points in a tough place to come."

" I think [Saskatchewan] is better than what maybe the record reflects. I thought they caused us problems at times. But we scored in almost perfect moments of the game to kind of deflate them, and I'm really happy to get the three points and get out of this."

Next Up:
The Cascades continue their road swing next weekend with a trip to Prince George to face the UNBC Timberwolves on Friday and Saturday. Game times are set for 11am and 12pm respectively, and both matches can be streamed live on Canada West TV.
