Abbotsford, BC -
Julia Tuchscherer found her 150
th career block, but the UFV Cascades dropped a 72-41 result to the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday morning's school day game in Abbotsford.
The result sees the Cascades record drop to 8-8 on the season, while UBC improves to 11-4 at the top of the division.
How it happened:
A three pointer late in the first quarter from UBC's Stella Lagrange put the visitors up 17-13, and a 20-11 frame would give the Thunderbirds a 37-24 lead at half time. Despite the scoreline, that second quarter would see UFV's
Julia Tuchscherer find a pair of blocks to push her career tally to 150.
Tuchscherer would put up nine in the third quarter for UFV, but balanced scoring from UBC would see them extend their lead further. The Cascades would battle to stay in it, but the Thunderbirds would hold on and the teams would empty the benches part way through the fourth.
Notable:
Tuchscherer finished the game with three blocks to push her to 151 in her Canada West career. That sets her in fourth all-time in Canada West regular season play, and tied for the 10
th most in U SPORTS all-time.
Julia Tuchscherer led UFV with 17 points, three blocks, and five assists, while
Fania Taylor shipped in nine points.
Olivia Weekes led a balanced UBC attack with 12 points, and Stella Langrange added 11.
Quotable:
UFV forward
Julia Tuchscherer
"That's pretty cool. I just kind of go out there and do my role. Maybe get a few blocks on defence, but it's not something I really think about."
"I don't think we competed as hard as we wanted to today, so tomorrow we are just going to go in still hungry. I think we can compete with UBC despite the score today if we go out there and compete for a solid 40 minutes. We had a good first quarter, if we can continue that we will be pretty good."
UFV guard
Bernie Leda on Friday's school game
"It's always been bigger than basketball for me. I love being a role model for younger kids. I coach for a female focus club, and I just love seeing them love basketball and getting them to enjoy the sport and community. I know some people get frazzled by [big crowds] but I was loving it."
Up Next:
The two teams will meet up once again on Saturday, with tip-off set for 4pm at the UFV Athletic Centre.
