Abbotsford, BC- The UFV Cascades men's basketball team dropped a two-point result, 90-88, on Friday to the Trinity Western Spartans at the UFV Athletic Centre.
The result sees UFV's hopes of hosting a playoff game take a hit as they fall to 11-7 on the season. Meanwhile, TWU improves to 8-11.
How it happened:
After UFV took a 12-10 lead on a
Dario Lopez triple, TWU struck back with a 13-2 run to open up a lead.
UFV would chip into that immediately, starting the second on a 9-2 run of their own, and a
Matthias Klim three would guarantee the teams would head into the break tied at 42.
TWU started the third on a 9-0 run, but UFV would battle back again, and another Klim three would put the Cascades up by a single point with three minutes to go in the frame. Back-to-Back threes from the Spartans would swap the momentum again, and TWU held a five-point advantage heading into the fourth.
Triples from Pearse Long and Tyus Devries stretched the TWU advantage to 11 in the fourth before four points from Lopez and five from
Jaylen Lee pulled UFV within striking distance once more. Klim cut the lead to just two with a minute to go, and although UFV would trade buckets and stay within a single point in the final moments the Cascades weren't able to get off the final shot and they fell 90-88.
Notable:
Bennett O'Connor led all players with 24 points on the night for UFV, while Klim finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds in the game. Lopez added 15 points of his own in the contest.
Devries had a team-high 21 points for TWU, while Long finished with 18 of his own. TWU shot 16-31 from three point range in the game, while UFV was 8-25.
The Cascades celebrated graduating players
Dario Lopez and
Matthias Klim in a senior night ceremony pregame.
Quotable:
UFV forward Matthias Klim
"It's not the result that we wanted, but I think we made strides in this game that we can use to come back on Monday and make this the last loss of the season. Move forward into UBCO and the playoffs, and just work on things like defending the three because they were scorching from three tonight. Just working on things we can do to try to make a deep run for me and Dario's last year."
"That's the loudest I've ever heard in this gym. It gave me goosebumps, it was amazing. We need that support moving forward, whether it's here or on the road with people watching online, we feel it. And just having the 30 people from my family here support, and my mom and dad, and having Dario's mom here. That was super special for me."
"Obviously it was awesome having my family here, but I see them every weekend. So it honestly felt more special having Dario's mom here to meet her and have her watching. I would have loved for her to see us get the win, but I was just super happy for him to have his mom here."
"The moment I'm going to remember specifically is the one where Hayden [Sansalone] gave it to me in the corner, and I hit the three to put us up by one. I looked into the crowd to see my whole family there and screaming."
