MVB: Cascades see strong start overtaken in loss to Huskies

Saskatoon, SK – The UFV Cascades men's volleyball team dropped a three set decision (27-29, 18-25, 21-25)  on Saturday afternoon in Saskatoon to the Saskatchewan Huskies.

The result drops UFV to 0-16 on the season, while Saskatchewan improves to 9-9.

How it happened:
The Cascades jumped out to an early 8-3 lead in the opening set, but the Huskies would battle back to even it up at 14. The teams would go blow for blow through much of the rest of the set, with each team earning set point opportunities, but with the score level at 27 the Huskies were the beneficiaries of a called touch on a hit that went long before a Noah Opseth block finished off the frame 29-27.

The Huskies jumped out to a 19-10 lead in the second, as they cruised to the second set win 25-18.

An Ethan Stoker ace for UFV would tie up the third set at 15, but a seven point run from the Huskies would make it a 22-15 game. The Cascades would push hard over the next few points, with a Hudson Brandsma kill cutting the deficit to 24-21, but Saskatchewan would close out the set and the match with an Isaiah Mamer kill.

Notable:
Roan McCarthy led the way for UFV with six kills and three aces, while Hudson Brandsma added six kills, and setter Silas Van Huizen had 18 assists and eight digs.

Mamer had a match-high 14 kills for the Huskies, while Emmett Graham had 12 kills and three aces.

Up Next:
The Cascades will now return home for a pair of matches against the UBC Thunderbirds next Friday and Saturday, with the first serve set for 8pm and 6pm respectively.
