Saskatoon, SK – With playoff positioning hanging in the balance and the regular season winding down, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's volleyball team came back after a slow start to defeat the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades 3–1 at the Physical Activity Complex.
The win lifts Saskatchewan to 11-7 on the season and keeps the Huskies firmly in control of sixth place in the Canada West standings, a critical spot that carries a direct path to the quarterfinals.
How it happened:
The Cascades came out swinging in the opening set. Led by fifth year outside hitter
Lauren Attieh with six kills and an ace, UFV snagged a 25-19 opening set win.
The teams went point for point throughout the second, but with UFV looking to close it out at 25-26, a pair of Rosetta Cyr kills and a UFV error saw the hosts take it 28-26.
A pair of early runs in the third saw the Huskies jump out to an 11-5 lead early on. The hosts would increase their advantage to eight, and despite a late push from UFV, Saskatchewan closed it out.
The teams would trade short runs throughout the fourth, but the Huskies would once again pull away late to clinch the match 25-20.
Notable:
UFV was led by
Lauren Attieh with 13 kills, while
Mandi Feist and
Talia Attieh added 10 and nine kills respectively.
Taryn Hannah led the way for Saskatchewan with a match-high 17 kills while adding two service aces. Rosetta Cyr was efficient and composed at the net, posting 12 kills.
