Abbotsford, BC – UFV Cascades rookie
Hristo Manov had a team-high 14 kills on Saturday, but after a marathon fourth set, it was the Saskatchewan Huskies who came out victorious 25-17, 20-25, 25-17, 33-31.
The Huskies improve to 2-0 to start the year, while the Cascades fall to 0-2.
How it happened:
Back-to-back aces from Saskatchewan's Jacob Baird put them up 11-5 early in the opening set, and they would carry that advantage through to take it 25-17.
UFV Battled back in the second, going down early, but a pair of
Kian Bos aces, and another from
Danilo Skipina helped them level the set at 16. From there,
Ethan Stoker found three kills and an ace to close out the frame 25-20 and give UFV their first set win of the opening weekend.
Saskatchewan would regain their footing in the third, building a five-point advantage early, before cruising to the 25-17 set win.
The teams would trade points throughout a hotly contested fourth set, before finding themselves tied up at 24. UFV would earn set point opportunities after kills from Stoker and Manov, but the Huskies would manage to fend off both. From there Saskatchewan would earn three straight match point chances, and despite a valiant effort from the young Cascades squad, a Huskies block would end the match 33-31.
Notable:
Manov led UFV with 14 kills and a .280 hitting percentage, while Stoker and Skipina each posted 12 kills, and
Tayven Magnowski had 25 assists.
Reuben Veith had a match-high 17 kills for the Huskies, while Lucas Musschoot chipped in 15.
UFV had just 19 service errors in the match while Saskatchewan had 26. The Huskies had 13 total blocks in the match compared to three from UFV.
