Abbotsford, BC – After picking up a four-set win the previous night, the UFV Cascades women's volleyball team dropped a five-set decision (25-17, 13-25, 25-21, 22-25) to the Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday at the UFV Athletic Centre.
The result means both teams leave the opening week of play with a 1-1 record.
How it happened:
The Cascades started right where they left off the previous night, with a
Mollie English ace giving them a 7-2 lead before Evengeline Zeyha found a pair of blocks and a pair of kills to stretch the advantage to 17-7. UFV would cruise from there, and Zeyha's fifth kill of the set closed out the frame 25-17.
Saskatchewan battled back in the second, dominating the frame enroute to a 25-13 set win.
After trading runs in the early portion of the third, the Cascades would find a small edge to go up 2-1 after a kill and a block from
Aubree Sunderland sealed the set.
An Ella Milne ace capped off a strong start to the fourth set for the Huskies, as they snagged a five-point lead. The Cascades would claw back to tie the set up at 22, but back to back kills from Mackenzie Lyburn would give Saskatchewan the 25-22 win and force a decisive fifth set.
After UFV went up 5-2 in the final frame, a Saskatchewan timeout would turn the tides. Back-to-back kills from Rosetta Cyr would help along a seven-point run for the Huskies to take the lead before a Tielle Hagel ace, and a kill from Milne finished off the match 15-9.
Notable:
Zeyha led all Cascades with 14 kills, a .418 hitting percentage, and six blocks in the match.
Mollie English had 29 assists for UFV, while
Talia Attieh had 12 kills and rookie
Aubree Sunderland had eight.
Jessica Bergstrom had 15 kills and two aces for the Huskies in the win.
