Abbotsford, BC – A career-high 26-point performance from
Jaylen Lee, and a double-double from
Taige Roberts proved to come up just short as the UFV Cascades men's basketball team dropped a 95-85 decision to the UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday at the UFV Athletic Centre.
The result sees UFV fall to 0-2, while UBC improves to 2-0 on the season.
How it happened:
Lee and Roberts combined for 10 points and eight points respectively, as the Cascades fought out a 24-21 lead after one quarter.
UBC responded in the second, getting nine points from Edouard Gauthier, to help them eke out a three-point lead at the half time break.
Both teams entered the third shooting better than 40 percent. The Thunderbirds started the fourth on a 15-5 run, but UFV would battle back to pull within four points early in the fourth on a
Bennett O'Connor jumper. That was as close as the Cascades would get however as UBC pulled away once again to close out the 10-point win.
Notable:
Jaylen Lee's 26 point game is the best scoring game of his Canada West career.
UFV's
Taige Roberts earned his first Canada West start in the game, lining up across the court from his older brother, and UBC player, Nylan Roberts. The younger brother finished the game with 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Nylan ended with 18 points and six boards.
UBC's Gauthier finished the game with 28 points and 13 rebounds, while Immanuel Oludele had 21 points.
Quotable:
UFV forward
Taige Roberts
"It feels pretty good. Coach Joe trusts me to start the game today, so I did what I could with that. My teammates trust me with the ball, so when I get my shots, I shoot them. Hopefully I can make them, which I did today. They also know I'm going to get my rebounds and get them extra possessions. I just try to do what I can for the team."
"Playing with my brother tonight was really fun. I mean if you watch the film, you can see we went at it a couple of times. Really battling each other. It's fun."
Up Next:
The Cascades head to Langley and Kelowna next week as they take on the TWU Spartans and UBCO Heat on Thursday and Saturday respectively.
