Abbotsford, BC – The UFV Cascades women's volleyball team was unable to avenge a Friday night loss, as they dropped a three-set decision to the U SPORTS No. 2 ranked UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday afternoo0n at the UFV Athletic Centre.
The loss drops UFV's record this season to 9-9, while UBC improves to 15-3.
How it Happened:
The teams traded blows early in the opener, but UBC would grab the first real advantage when a pair of Lucy Borowski kills and an Issy Robertshaw ace forced a UFV timeout at 14-10. A Sol Henson kill would extend the lead to as many as seven for UBC -- and despite a late push from the Cascades to pull back within four after a
Naomi Unger block – the visitors closed out the set 25-19.
Five straight kills from Borowski in the second kicked off a big run in the middle of the second, as UBC flew out to a 20-10 lead. UFV would regain their footing late in the frame, but UBC held on to claim it 25-17 and take a stranglehold on the match.
UBC would grab a 16-12 lead in the third, but the Cascades dug in getting an ace from
Sydney Wright and a kill from
Talia Attieh to tie it back up at 16. The teams battled all the way to a 24-24 tie, but it was UBC that would find the decisive edge. Kylee Glanville set up match point with a kill, before closing out the match herself with an ace.
Notable:
Mandi Feist led the Cascades with 12 kills to go with seven digs, while
Lauren Attieh had six kills, nine digs, and three blocks.
Cailin Bitter posted 16 assists in the match.
Borowski had a match-high 14 kills, while Glanville added 10 for UBC.
The result means UFV will need help if they have any hopes of earning a play-in round bye.
The Cascades remain one win behind the Saskatchewan Huskies, who will take on the Regina Cougars in a pair of matches to close out the regular season next week.
Up next:
The Cascades will close out their regular season next week at home against the University of Manitoba Bisons. Matches are set for Friday and Saturday at the UFV Athletic Centre. Saturday's match will also include a ceremony celebrating a number of graduating senior players from UFV.
