Abbotsford, BC – A pair of goals from
Spencer Mellett, and
Mateo Brazinha's 30
th career Canada West marker helped propel the UFV Cascades men's soccer team to a 5-1 victory over the UBC Okanagan Heat on Saturday at Rotary Stadium.
With the win, the Cascades improve to 4-3-1 on the season. Meanwhile UBCO continues to look for their first points of the season at 0-6.
How it happened :
The Cascades started fast, with Brazinha bursting up the left before finding
Grischa Heider in the box. He deftly found
Kevin Mailand, who made no mistake slotting it home to open the scoring.
Dante Colebourne would draw a penalty for the Cascades in the 38
th minute, and Mellett would step up to the spot for UFV. The former UBCO player calmly picked his spot to make it 2-0.
Just moments later Brazinha followed suit making it 3-0. After a long ball forward from
Julian Pearce, Brazinha drove into the box before picking the corner for his 30
th career Canada West goal.
Ian Klumpen would pull one back for the Heat in the 66
th minute, capitalizing on a scramble in the UFV box.
Mellett would get another chance from the spot in the 85
th minute, as
Nolan MacMillan would earn UFV a penalty just minutes after making his Canada West debut. Mellett calmly finished it down the middle.
Three minutes later,
Michael Beecroft would finish off the scoring for the night when he got his head on a free kick from Mellett for his third of the season.
Notable :
Mellett capped off a strong weekend, adding two goals and an assist after scoring against UNBC the previous day.

th all-time in Canada West

The Cascades now get set to hit the road next week as they will take on the university of Lethbridge on Friday, before playing MacEwan University on Sunday.
