Ken Fernstrom played a key role in the growth of the UFV men’s soccer program. He joined fellow Hall of Famer Scott Fast on the coaching staff in 1988, the team’s second season, and spent 17 years with the Cascades, serving as team manager alongside new bench boss Alan Errington for one season after Fast’s retirement.

During Fernstrom’s tenure, UFV men’s soccer earned two first-place finishes in the BCCAA regular season, three conference medals, and a CCAA national bronze medal in 1995. Fernstrom and Fast coached winter, indoor and summer league teams and organized the annual UCFV International Tournament. They epitomized the “builder” concept, laying the groundwork for the Cascades’ eventual move up to Canada West and U SPORTS.
