The Cascades women's hoopsters are riding a wave of momentum coming off a weekend sweep of the UNBC Timberwolves, the No. 10-ranked team in the nation at the time. Head coach
Al Tuchscherer's squad carried itself with a new degree of confidence, and executed the game plan at a high level at both ends of the floor. UFV's offensive output both nights (
72 points on Friday,
74 on Saturday) were season-highs.
The Heat, meanwhile, are the last winless team in Canada West. But whether facing first-place UNBC or last-place UBCO, Tuchscherer said his team will continue to seek improvements to its own performance. A highlight thus far has been the defence – UFV allows just 63.3 points per game, fourth-best in Canada West.
"The key point is keeping focus on our stuff and continuing to improve different facets of our team," Tuchscherer said.
"The past couple weeks we've been talking about putting together a complete effort at both ends of the floor for the entirety of the game. I think everybody on our team felt we were close to a breakthrough, and it was good to see that happen on Friday night and carry into Saturday. It's important we carry that momentum moving forward."
Players to watch: Cascades fourth-year forward
Taylor Claggett had an outstanding weekend against UNBC, totalling 53 points, 17 rebounds and seven assists over the two-game sweep. For her efforts, she garnered
Canada West women's third star of the week honours. She's among the conference leaders in a number of categories: fifth in scoring (19.3 points per game), 12th in rebounding (8.3), and tied for 18th in assists (2.9). This weekend, Claggett will match up with another double-double threat in UBCO's fourth-year forward
Jordan Korol, who ranks fifth in Canada West rebounding (10.1 per game) to go with a team-best 15.6 points per game.
