Cascades, WolfPack jockey for playoff positioning

Friday, Jan. 31: Cascades (10-6, 7th in Canada West) at Thompson Rivers WolfPack (11-5, 6th in Canada West), 5 p.m.
Saturday, Feb. 1: Cascades at WolfPack, 7 p.m.
Kamloops, BC

THE MATCH-UP

While the Cascades and WolfPack have both clinched playoff berths, this weekend's games will go a long way towards determining seeding. The two teams sit shoulder-to-shoulder in the Canada West standings, with TRU in sixth and UFV in seventh, but the Cascades hold the edge in the RPI rankings on which playoff seedings will be based. The two teams met in the preseason in Kamloops, back on Oct. 19, with the WolfPack earning a 93-75 decision. But it's worth noting that UFV starters Sukhjot Bains and Daniel Adediran did not play in that game due to injury.

RECENT FORM

The Cascades come in on a seven-game win streak, coming off 86-82 and 95-86 victories over Mount Royal last weekend on the road. TRU is weathering a bit of turbulence for the first time this season – they suffered their first back-to-back losses of the Canada West campaign last weekend at UVic, which ended a five-game win streak of their own.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Vick Toor, UFV – The Cascades are at their best when Toor gets rolling in transition. The third-year point guard is a dynamic athlete in the open court, and he's third on the team in scoring (9.8 points per game) and second in assists (3.5) while shooting a scorching 55.6 per cent from the field.

Joe Davis, TRU – The WolfPack's 6'6" senior forward is one of Canada West's most skilled operators in the low post, and he's always been a handful for the Cascades. He leads his team in assists (3.3 per game) and ranks second in scoring (16.3) and rebounds (6.4).

QUOTABLE

"We weren't happy with our performance last weekend, even though we came out with two wins – that was a bonus. There was a lot we know we can improve on, especially on the defensive end and rebounding. Offence isn't really an issue for us at this stage of the season. We know we can get our open shots, we can get buckets. But defensively, if we're not focused, it can translate to the offensive side." – UFV fourth-year forward Daniel Adediran, on whether complacency is a danger for his team in the midst of a seven-game win streak

"I think the challenges of playing TRU are pretty much the same every year. They have a set offence they run, much different from a lot of teams we've played this season that run a more free-flowing offence . . . They know what to do at all times, especially defensively. They're going to look extensively at film and know exactly what to do against each of our players." – Adediran, on the challenges of facing TRU
