Four UFV volleyballers earn all-PACWEST recognition

Four volleyball players from the University of the Fraser Valley were honoured on Wednesday as the PACWEST handed out its 2019-20 regular-season awards.

On the women's side, Amanda Matsui and Chelsea Kidd were voted PACWEST second team all-stars, while Sedona Arabsky was the recipient of the conference's rookie of the year award and was also named to the all-rookie team.

The UFV men's volleyball team saw Caleb Kastelein recognized for his outstanding debut with a PACWEST all-rookie nod.

Sedona Arabsky became the first Cascades women's volleyball player to win the PACWEST rookie of the year award since 2013, when Kira Tome took the prize. The 6'0" middle out of Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary in Surrey, B.C. led the Cascades and finished fourth overall in the PACWEST in blocks (0.57/set), and 16th in aces (0.33/set). Arabsky was also a highly efficient attacker, hitting .335 while posting 1.61 kills per set, fourth-most on the team.

Amanda Matsui, in her third year in the league, earner her third straight PACWEST all-star nod following first-team accolades in 2017-18 and 2018-19. The 6'1" left side out of Port Coquitlam, B.C.'s Riverside Secondary was the Cascades' most prolific attacking player, leading the team in kills (2.96) and total offence (3.52) on a per-set basis, and ranking fourth and fifth, respectively, in the conference in those categories. Matsui also showed her defensive abilities, finishing fifth in the league in digs (3.14/set).

Chelsea Kidd finished her career with a flourish, staging a breakout campaign as a fifth-year senior. The 5'10" right side from Surrey's Clayton Heights Secondary finished 17th in the conference in kills (1.85/set) and 20th in total offence (2.23 points/set), and ranked third on the team in aces with 26. She's one of the Cascades' most reliable players at crunch time, and infuses the squad with strong veteran leadership.

Caleb Kastelein was a highly touted recruit out of Langley Christian Secondary, and he lived up to that billing with a strong rookie season. The 6'3" left side stepped right into the starting lineup and was a consistent contributor all year, finishing top-10 in the conference in both kills (2.65/set, eighth) and total offence (3.06 points/set, seventh).

The Cascades volleyball teams are at the PACWEST conference championships this week, hosted by Douglas College. On Thursday, the No. 4-seeded UFV women's squad opens the tourney at 12:30 p.m. vs. the No. 5 College of the Rockies Avalanche, while the No. 6 Cascades men's team takes on the No. 3 Capilano Blues at 3 p.m. Catch all the action at pacwestbc.tv.
