Claggett named Canada West women's athlete of the month

Taylor Claggett of the University of the Fraser Valley women's basketball team has been named the Canada West women's athlete of the month for January.

The fifth-year forward out of Mennonite Educational Institute had a monster month for the Cascades, averaging 19.6 points, 10.7 rebounds, and three assists per game as UFV went 8-1 in January to clinch a playoff berth.

Claggett also reached a pair of historic milestones. She broke the UFV women's basketball scoring record (1,406 points and counting), and established a new Canada West record for career free throws (500 and counting).

For the season, Claggett leads CW in both scoring (19.7 points per game) and rebounding (10.4), and ranks 10th in assists (3.3). She's the only player in the conference to rank top-10 across all three categories.

The Cascades basketball teams are set to play their final regular-season games this weekend at home vs. the Regina Cougars. Games run Friday (women 6 p.m., men 8 p.m.) and Saturday (women 5 p.m., men 7 p.m.) at the Envision Financial Athletic Centre. Saturday will feature post-game Senior Night ceremonies for Claggett, and men's basketball seniors Sukhjot Bains, Parm Bains and Matt Cooley.

The Canada West male athlete of the month was Trinity Western volleyball player Eric Loeppky.
