Record-breaking performance nets athlete of the week nod for Zanatta

University of the Fraser Valley midfielder Trevor Zanatta, coming off a record-breaking performance on Sunday vs. UBC, has been honoured as the Canada West men's soccer athlete of the week.

The third-year Criminal Justice student from Coquitlam, B.C. typically plays in a defensive posture as a holding midfielder, but was shifted up the pitch into an attacking role on Sunday. The move paid immediate dividends, as Zanatta racked up four assists in a 5-1 win over the Thunderbirds to set a new Canada West single-game record.

Zanatta got things started just 20 seconds into the game, lobbing a high-arcing header into the box for Jun Won Choi to finish. He went on to orchestrate goals by Anthony Vega (26th minute), Manpal Brar (38') and Taylor Richardson (56').

The previous CW record of three assists in a game had been achieved 15 times by 13 different players, most recently by UVic's Isaac Koch on Aug. 23, 2019 vs. Trinity Western.

Zanatta's four points in a game are tied for the most for the Cascades in the Canada West era, joining Sasa Plavsic (Oct. 26, 2012 – two goals, two assists vs. Winnipeg) and Craig Robinson (Oct. 27, 2012 – two goals, two assists vs. Mount Royal). Remarkably, Plavsic and Robinson achieved the feat on back-to-back days in 2012.

Zanatta is the third Cascade to earn CW athlete of the week honours, following Jackson Jacob and Eli Greene of the men's golf team, and he will move forward as the CW nominee for the U SPORTS men's athlete of the week award.

The Cascades soccer teams are on the road this week, facing the Thompson Rivers WolfPack in Kamloops. Games run Friday (women 5 p.m., men 7 p.m.) and Saturday (men 5 p.m., women 7 p.m.) and will be streamed on CanadaWest.tv presented by Co-op.
