Prince George, BC -
Kian Proctor scored just before halftime to pull the UFV Cascades men's soccer team back into the game, but it was not enough, as they fell 3-1 to the UNBC Timberwolves on Friday in Prince George.Â
The defeat eliminates the Cascades from Canada West playoff contention.
"I'm really proud of the boys," UFV head coach
Tom Lowndes said after the game. "We have faced more adversity this season that I have seen in my previous eight years here. We had a four-hour plane delay today, and they still came out and gave a fantastic effort."
"One thing we haven't done this year is quit. We have fought in every game, and I can't say enough about this group for that. It makes me really proud that they believe in each other, and they won't stop no matter what."
The Timberwolves got off to a terrific start, as Michael Henman got the final touch after Isaac Tate drove into the box to put the hosts up 1-0 in the 3
rd minute.
Henman got involved again in the 36
th minute, as he laid the ball off for Gregor Smith who found the bottom right corner of the net with his shot to double the lead.Â
The Cascades responded with three minutes to go before the half.
Adriano Consiglio made a fantastic move to get past his marker on the right wing, before playing the ball across goal to Proctor who made no mistake firing home his team-leading fourth goal of the year.
Â
Proctor looked to have an open chance in the 60
th minute, as he picked up the ball off a scramble in the box, but his hard shot was smothered by a diving Daniel Zadrevec in the UNBC net.Â
That would be as close as UFV would get however, as just moments later Henman picked out a pass to Charlie Stewart on the break. Stewart took a couple of touches before firing a shot that found its way past UFV goalkeeper
Jackson Cowx.Â
The Cascades and Timberwolves face off once again on Sunday afternoon in Prince George. Kickoff is set for 2:15 pm, and as always, the game can be seen live on Canada West TV.
Lowndes noted that despite the playoffs being out of reach, the team has a lot to play for.
"We are going to have to rotate the squad a bit on Sunday, but it's about pride. It's playing for the name on the front of the shirt and building on something that we can look forward to for next season. I have no doubt that we'll be motivated and look to get a result on Sunday."
