Abbotsford, BC –
Mateo Brazinha opened the scoring for the UFV Cascades, but two second half goals, including a winner in stoppage time, gave the Trinity Western University Spartans all three points on Sunday afternoon at Rotary Stadium.Â
The Loss drops the Cascades to 2-10 on the season, while the Spartans improve to 6-2-5 this year.Â
UFV's first year goalkeeper
Kody Torrance made seven saves in the effort, while TWU netminder Jordan Marwood made five on the day.Â
How it happened:
The Cascades looked to take the lead in the 15
th minute as
Bhagvir Sidhu put the ball in the net following a free kick, but the play was called back for offside to keep the game level.Â
UFV would find their breakthrough in the 52
nd minute. Brazinha chased down a slow back pass to the TWU keeper, and his sliding challenge left the ball sitting in front of an open goal six yards out. The second-year striker reacted quickly, jumping up to tap it in for his first of the season and a 1-0 lead. Â
Â
That lead would not last long however, as the Spartans found an answer in the 64
th. Jordan Low sent a lead pass to Charles Nana, who dribbled into the box and fired a shot into the top corner to level it.Â
First-year UFV attacker
Kian Proctor had a good chance to give the Cascades a lead in the 79
th, but after receiving the long ball from
Parmbir Kular Proctor's touch took him wide and he was unable to get the left footed shot past a sprawling Marwood.Â
Torrance kept his team in it in the 90
th minute, as he made a terrific diving save to stop a hard shot from Keishean Francois. However, just moments later on the ensuing corner Mario Banovic flicked the ball on to Low, who managed to redirect it with his head just under the bar for the winner.Â
Quotable:
UFV attacker Mateo Brazinha
"The results haven't gone our way, but some of them I think we've been unfortunate. I think our performances haven't matched our record which is unfortunate, but we're going to finish off this year strong and who knows if other teams' results favour us. I won't say die until it's mathematically impossible. That's what the program is all about. We are not going to stop, ever."
UFV head coach Tom Lowndes
"Getting Mateo [Brazinha]Â back after missing six games with the broken hand was huge. It's been a rough season injury-wise, but hopefully we'll have him back for the last four games."
"I thought Kody [Torrance] made some big saves to keep us in it, and I thought he was really solid. I think he's hard done by because he will probably beat himself up that he's let two in tonight, but I can't fault him. I thought he was good tonight as a first-year keeper."
"To start the game with that many first-year players on the pitch in a derby game is never going to be easy, and I thought they gave a really good account of themselves and showed that we could have a really bright future."
Up Next:
The Cascades now travel to Prince George for a pair of matches next week against the UNBC Timberwolves. Games are set for October 13 at 7:45 pm, and October 15 at 2:15 pm. Both games can also be seen live and on demand on Canada West TV.
