WVB: Cascades hitters have big night as UFV defeats MacEwan in straight sets

Abbotsford, BC – Gabrielle Attieh led all players with 18 kills, as the UFV Cascades knocked down a combined 56 kills in a three-set victory (25-23, 25-19, 25-13) over the MacEwan Griffins on Friday at the UFV Athletic Centre.

The win pulls the Cascades record level with the Griffins at 3-2 so far this season.

As it happened:
Both teams traded runs throughout the first set, but with the score level at 23 UFV found the decisive edge. After a Cascades timeout, UFV got a kill from Gabrielle Attieh, and an attack error from the Griffins to come away with the set win.

MacEwan held a 12-11 advantage in the second, but back-to-back kills from Natalie Lemoine-Sells and then an ace from Alicja Hardy-Francis got the hosts rolling and UFV took a 17-13 lead. The Griffins would pull back within two before the Cascades locked in five of the final six points in the set to take it 25-19.

The Cascades continued rolling in the third, jumping out to an 11-3 lead thanks in part to five kills from Gabrielle Attieh and three from Natalie Lemoine-Sells. UFV cruised from that point to take the match.

The Cascades 56 kills in the match equaled their 56 team digs as well, in comparison to just 30 kills and 35 digs for MacEwan.

Top performers:
Gabrielle Attieh's 18 kill performance was a match-high, while Lauren Attieh added 12, and Natalie Lemoine-Sells had 10.  Lemoine-Sells pitched in 10 digs, while Emily Matsui scored a team-best 15 for UFV.

Mariah Bereziuk led the Griffins with 10 kills, and teammate Alyshia Bryks had seven. Bronwyn Ettinger had a match-leading 16 digs for the visitors.

Quotable:
Cascades Setter Kinna Fisher

"I think our team in general is really good at that, preparing for the opponent specifically, and I felt pretty good coming into today knowing we had done the work to plan for it."

"We'll go back and watch a lot of video and see the things we did well tonight and the stuff we can work on. Then it's just get a lot of rest, good food, good rehab and stretching."
