Prince George, BC –
Brooklynn Franzon,
Kiana Langston, and
Halle McCambley each notched a goal and rookie goalkeeper
Addison Chen picked up the victory in goal, as the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades secured their first win of the season 3-1 over the UNBC Timberwolves.
How it happened
UFV controlled the match early, forcing UNBC goalkeeper Brityn Hinsche into six saves in the first half. However, it would take until the second half for the Cascades to finally get their breakthrough.
Dani Coss forced a turnover in the Timberwolves end, and Franzon wasted no time, unleashing a looping strike on her first touch from 35 yards out that found the back of the net in the 48
th minute.
UNBC responded just 12 minutes later, as Claire Turner got on the end of a Kalista Kirkness corner, who beat Chen to knot the game at one apiece.
With the game level, the Cascades ramped the pressure up once again. After a long stretch of pressure, UFV's
Jenna Mele played in a free kick that made it past everyone and struck the back post before bouncing around on the Timberwolves goal line. After a scramble, it was Langston who deposited the ball to give UFV a 2-1 lead.
With the Timberwolves pushing players forward late, McCambley gained possession off an errant UNBC clearance and fired an insurance marker into the bottom left corner to secure the victory.
Quotable
Cascades' defender Mele on the win.
"It's a good three points. All the points matter in this league, and it's really going to carry us forward into next week. It's a nice building block – having that win already under our belts is just going to help us."
Cascades head coach Ari Adams on the mix of youth and experience in the squad.
"We definitely have a lot of rookies on the field at a time, and they bring a certain sense of energy, but at the same time we have these fifth-year players who want it even more for different reasons. They're able to contribute in different ways whether it's leadership, or organization on the field."
Where they sit
The win pushes the Cascades to 1-1-0 after an opening night defeat to UBC, while the Timberwolves fall to 0-2-0 and head into a bye week. UFV's next match is set for Saturday, September 2 at Trinity Western University. Kickoff is set for 5pm, live on Canada West TV.
Notable
It was a story of firsts for the Cascades, as the victory marked the first Canada West victory for coach Adams. Chen also notched their first career win in the Cascades goal, while Franzon's opening goal and Langston's winner go down as the first Canada West tally for each of them.
