Kamloops, BC –
Jackson Cowx kept the UFV Cascades in the game, making four saves in the losing effort, but the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack came away with a 2-0 victory and all three points on Friday.
The Cascades played most of the night down two players after one player was ejected from the game in the 25th minute for accumulating two yellow cards followed by a straight red card just 10 minutes later.
How it happened:
After a hard tackle,
Bhagvir Sidhu received his second yellow card of the game in the 25
th minute, and the Cascades were reduced to 10 players early on. Things went from bad to worse just 10 minutes later, as
Adam Szymanski was shown a straight red card for a crunching challenge at midfield.Â
A number of strong saves from Cowx ensured the teams went into the halftime break level, despite relentless pressure from TRU.Â
The WolfPack finally managed to break down the shorthanded Cascades in the 63
rd minute, as Mikael Rosenlund rose to nod home the corner kick from Patrick Izett.Â
UFV refused to go away without a fight however and earned themselves a couple set pieces in dangerous positions but were unable to snatch a goal.Â
TRU found their insurance marker in the 82
nd minutes, as Dylan Hooper pounced on a shot that had hit the post, burying it to seal the game 2-0.
The result was key in the Canada West playoff race as TRU moves to 3-5-1 and takes sole possession of the fourth and final playoff spot in the Pacific Division, while UFV drops to 2-7 on the season.
Quotable:
UFV head coach Tom Lowndes
"I'm really proud. I can't say enough about the guys that were left on the field and had to adjust after two bad decisions from us. They could have quit, they could have gone into their shells, but they stood up and they were counted."
"When you go down one man it's asking a lot, but you might be able to pull something out. When you go down two, you're really asking for a miracle and to keep it scoreless for 63 minutes, I'm really proud of the team."
"We can't hide from it, we are getting into must win territory. We are going to be missing some payers now, so it's another bit of adversity and another chance to test ourselves and to get better and put forth our best effort. I think a result on Sunday can get us back into the playoff race at least."
Up Next:
The Cascades now head to Kelowna to take on the UBC Okanagan Heat on Sunday at 12pm. Meanwhile, TRU will remain at home tomorrow when they face the Trinity Western Spartans
