Abbotsford, BC – The UFV Cascades men's basketball team was unable to come back from an early deficit for the second straight game as they fell to the University of Alberta Golden Bears 84-73 on Saturday night.
As it happened:Â
A 13-4 run to start the game gave Alberta the early lead, but UFV chipped away eventually cutting the deficit to just one point after a
Hans Befus triple. However, a four-point play from Brandon Meiklejohn re-established the lead at the end of the opening frame.
Alberta built on that lead in the second and third, before an Adam Paige jumper gave them their biggest lead of the night in the fourth quarter at 24 points. The Cascades would not go away quietly, scoring 11 points in the final two minutes, but it would prove to be too late as the visitors held on for an 11-point victory.
Top performers:Â
Dylan Kinley had a team-high 29 points to go with seven rebounds and six assists on the night for UFV, while
Clay Kurtz finished with 11 points and three boards.Â
Adam Paige scored 26 points and added five rebounds for Alberta, while Brandon Meiklejohn had 15 points and three assists, and Lars Ishimwe posted 14 points nine boards and six assists.Â
Quotable:
Cascades head coach
Joe Enevoldson
"We haven't a quit moment, where we completely shut it down. We work real hard. We make mistakes, and we have to get better collectively as a whole, but there is no quit and I'm proud of the team for that."
"There was a lot of opportunities tonight where we could have packed it in, and we didn't. That's going to benefit us down the stretch run to have that level of resolve to us."
