MBB: Kinley, Cascades come back to finish weekend sweep of Bobcats

Abbotsford, BC – Dylan Kinley led all scorers with 31 points as the UFV Cascades came back from a 19-point deficit in the first half to come away with an 86-81 victory, and a weekend sweep of the Brandon University Bobcats on Saturday at the UFV Athletic Centre.

The Cascades win moves them to 6-10 on the season and in sole possession of the 12th and final playoff spot in Canada West, while the Bobcats fall to 12-6 so far this campaign.

How it Happened
The Bobcats found their scoring touch early, and a Dominique Dennis bucket at the end of the first quarter made it 31-19 for the team from Brandon. The Bobcats continued to pile on the offence to start the second, as Sultan Haider Bhatti hit a jumper and a triple in quick succession to increase their lead to 19 points with 6:55 left in the first half.

A 12-2 run for UFV, finished off by a steal and a bucket for Clay Kurtz pulled the Cascades back within nine with under three to go in the half, and a Dario Lopez bucket made it just a seven-point game at the break.

The Cascades continued to chip away in the third with both Dylan Kinley and Takeshi Croke hitting big triples to pull UFV close. With under a minute to go in the frame Ismael Hernandez slammed home a massive dunk to level the score at 68 and give the Cascades all the momentum.

The teams traded blows in the fourth, but back-to-back triples from Hernandez and Croke put UFV up four. Haider Bhatti cut the Cascades lead to two with under a minute to go, but UFV's Clay Kurtz hit a shot from the charity stripe to push the lead to three. Dennis a chance to tie it for Brandon with seconds remaining, but his three-point bid clanked off the rim, and Kinley was fouled after picking up the board to seal it.

Top performers:
Kinley finished the game with 31 points, eight rebounds, and six assists for UFV, while Dario Lopez came away with 15 points, 11 boards and five assists. Takeshi Croke ended with 13 points, six boards, and three assists after going three of four from beyond the arc.

Haider Bhatti led the Bobcats with 24 points and seven rebounds in the game, while Dennis finished with 18 points.

Quotable:
Cascades head coach Joe Enevoldson

"That was a galvanizing weekend. We have been on the other end of those a lot this year, and it was nice to play against a team that has a very good record and for us to play the way we did in the first night was great, but to follow it up was better. When we went down in the first quarter tonight, we just chipped away at it. We showed a lot of heart, and congrats to our guys. They earned it."

"We just have to grow from it. This is just one weekend in a bevy of weekends. We have to keep stacking great days. Next weekend we are on the road against a great basketball team, and we are going to have to play with heart and get a win on Friday night.

Up next:
The Cascades head on the road next weekend for a pair of games against the Mount Royal University Cougars on Friday and Saturday. The game can be seen live on canadawest.tv.
