MSOC: Mailand and Mansell find the back of the net as Cascades clinch playoff spot with win over TRU

Abbotsford, BC – Kevin Mailand and Roland Mansell each found the back of the net in the second half as the UFV Cascades defeated the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack 2-0 on Friday evening at Rotary Stadium

The win moves the Cascades to 6-3-2 on the season, and guarantees that UFV will finish the regular season no lower than fourth place in the pacific division.

TRU meanwhile falls to 1-9-1 on the season, and sees their playoff hopes take a big hit with the result.

How it happened:
After a scoreless first half, the Cascades pounced early in the second frame. Mailand picked up the ball on his own side of centre, and made a terrific solo run up the right wing before seeing his shot nestle into the goal to make it 1-0 for UFV in the 53rd minute.

The Cascades continued to press, and they got their reward in the 74th. Just moments after Roland Mansell entered the game as a substitute for his first action of the 2024 Canada West season, he was the beneficiary of a great bit of play. Adam Szymanski drove up the middle of the pitch before finding Mateo Brazinha on the right of the box, and the forward slid it across the front of goal to Mansell who tapped it in to make it 2-0.

The Cascades threatened, but were unable to increase their lead, and a late flourish from the WolfPack was unable to break Jackson Cowx's clean sheet in the UFV goal as the second half came to a close.

Notable:
Cowx picked up his fourth shutout, and sixth win of the season in the UFV goal.

Mailand picked up his third goal of the campaign, while Brazinha's assist on Mansell's goal was his sixth of the season.

Quotable:
UFV head coach Tom Lowndes

"The boys have worked hard to get in the position we are in. Now our goal is to continue to attack these last five games to finish as high as we can. I'm proud of the effort, and I think this team can hit another level. We are looking ahead to Sunday against UBCO and we will go from there."

UFV defender Adam Szymanski

"The win feels great. Roland [Mansell] getting his first goal of the season in his first game was pretty great. I had a good run, and Mateo [Brazinha] to finish it off with the assist was pretty good."

"We have to keep pushing, working together as a team, and go win some playoff games. It all starts in training. We have to work hard because if we're lazy it all shows on the field. The last couple games we had before this we weren't sharp in training, and it showed."

Next Up:
The Cascades now get set to host the UBC Okanagan Heat on October 6. Game time is set for 2pm, and the game can be streamed live on canadawest.tv.
