Abbotsford, BC –
Kevin Mailand scored twice in the first half, and added a highlight reel assist in the second half as the UFV Cascades routed the UBC Okanagan Heat 6-0 on Sunday at Rotary Stadium in Abbotsford.Â
With the win, UFV goalkeeper
Jackson Cowx picked up his 17
th career Canada West win to pass Cascades' alumni Mark Village and set a new program record.
UFV striker
Mateo Brazinha also made UFV history on Sunday as he set up Mailand's first goal on the night to pick up his seventh assist of the season and set a new single-season program record.
The Cascades win moves them to 7-3-2, while UBCO drops to 2-8-3.Â
How it happened:
Mailand got the Cascades on the board in the 24
th minute, as he got on the end of a through ball from Brazinha, and his low shot beat UBCO keeper Ronan Woodroffe.
10 minutes later, UFV's
Bhagvir Sidhu managed to corral the ball of a corner, and crossed it back to a wide-open Mailand in front of the net who volleyed it home to make it 2-0.
Â
Sidhu wasn't done there, as he tracked down a clearance in the 57
th minute and, after playing a great give-and-go with
Riku Suga, he rounded the keeper to slide home his first goal as a Cascade.Â
Â
Four minutes later,
Roland Mansell sprung Mailand again on the left wing. The winger danced past one defender before rounding a sprawling Daniel Covelli, who replaced Woodroffe in the UBCO goal. Mailand looked sure to score his hat trick goal with just a defender on the goal line to beat, but the third-year stunned everyone in attendance when he unselfishly fed it back to Mansell for the easy tap-in.Â
Â
Gurnaj Sidhu added his first Canada West goal in the 76
th minute, as he collected a
Dante Colebourne corner and placed his shot into the right side of the net.
Just two minutes after that,
William Stuart sent a long ball forward to Mansell, and the big striker shrugged off two defenders before taking it past the keeper and casually slotting the ball home for his second of the night, and third of the weekend.

Quotable:
UFV head coach Tom Lowndes
"We talked at the start of the game about not being content with just being in the playoffs, but it's about how high can we go. I thought the first half was okay, and we took our moments well, but in the second half we took over and dominated."
Lowndes on Mailand's unselfish play
"I made a point of saying it to the guys, that's my favourite goal. That shows what he is all about, and that's the team first. For me that's the true meaning of being a good teammate, where it's all about the team, and the family, and it's not about the individual accolades. Really proud of Kevin."
Lowndes on Cowx and Brazinha setting program records
"We talked to Jackson [Cowx] at the start of the year and he had the goal that he wanted to break records, so for him to do that is huge, and Mateo [Brazinha] has been a handful all season and I'm really happy for him.
UFV winger Kevin Mailand on his assist
"I had the ball and I thought it would be my third goal and I could score that, but I saw Roland [Mansell] wide open, and if it's 1-0 or 0-0 I have to pass that so I just did what I thought was the right decision."
UFV goalkeeper Jackson Cowx on setting the program's wins record
"It's exciting. It's a great experience and an unbelievable achievement. I have to thank the goalkeepers that came before me, because without them there wouldn't be a record. It's a big honour, you see the level that [Mark] Village, [David] Hicks, and [Alex] Skrzeta all played at. I'm probably missing some names, but the level they played at helped us get to where we are now."
UFV Striker Mateo Brazinha on breaking the program's single season assist record
"It means a lot to me. It has been amazing to represent this program since I started here. It's a testament to the history of this program because I know now how hard it is, and how you have to work to get to this point. I don't care if I get a goal or an assist, if the team gets three points I would give those away."
Notable:
The Cascades held the heat without a shot on target in the first half on the way to the victory.
Brazinha ranks first in Canada West in assists with seven, and points with 14, while his seven goals has him ranked second in the conference.Â
Mailand has now scored five goals on the season for UFV, while Mansell is up to three goals in two games played after having come off the bench in both games this weekend.
