MSOC: Colebourne’s early goal stands as winner, as Cascades down 10-man Huskies

Abbotsford, BC – It took just two minutes for the UFV Cascades to get on the board, and they cruised to a 2-0 victory over the Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday night at Rotary Stadium. Rookie Dante Colebourne scored early and Mateo Brazinha added a late marker, as the Cascades came away with the victory.

The Cascades move to 4-1-2 with the result, while the Huskies drop to 2-4 on the season.

How it happened:
Colebourne got the Cascades rolling right off the opening kickoff. After picking up a loose ball just across midfield, the first-year midfielder drove to the top of the box and finished it beautifully into the bottom left corner just one minute and 40 seconds into the match.

Things turned from bad to worse for the Huskies in the 18th minute, as Robert Woodroofe-Brown got caught up in a fracas at the top of the UFV box after a corner kick. The Saskatchewan striker appeared to kick out and strike a UFV player after the whistle, and was shown a red card to put the visitors down to 10-men early on.

The Cascades pushed to increase the lead, but great chances from Jeevan Dhaliwal and Michael Beecroft were unable to find the target.

UFV would finally be rewarded in second half stoppage time, as Brazinha was sent in on goal. Saskatchewan keeper Jaron Slopinski managed to get a piece of the first shot and direct it off the left post, but the rebound came right back to Brazinha who finished it off for his team leading fifth goal of the season.

Notable:
The Cascades have now scored first in all seven of their matches this season.

Brazinha's fifth goal of the season puts him in a tie for the conference lead in goals after Friday night. The third-year striker also leads Canada West with four assists, and nine points.

Colebourne's early goal was the first of his Canada West career, and his third point so far this season.

UFV goalkeeper Jackson Cowx picked up his third shutout of the season, and the eighth clean sheet of his career to leave him three back of Mark Village for the program record.

Quotable:
UFV midfielder Dante Colbourne

On his first Canada West goal:
"It feels good. It definitely set the tone for the game, and it's awesome to contribute. The boys are hyped up to get the win, and just looking forward to Sunday now."

On playing at Rotary Stadium:
"Our team mentality is that we are just going to work hard, for each other and with each other, so that's what we want to do every game. Especially at Rotary, we want to make it hard for teams to come here and play us."

Next Up:
The Cascades now get set to take on the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns on Sunday, September 15, at 1pm. The game can be watched in person at Rotary Stadium in Abbotsford or streamed live on canadawest.tv.
