Prince George, BC –
Jaya Bains' 16
th minute goal proved to be the difference for the UFV Cascades, as they picked up the 1-0 road victory over the UNBC Timberwolves on Friday in Prince George. First-year goalkeeper
Alana Madec stopped all five shots she faced for the clean sheet, as the Cascades record improved to 2-3-0 and the Timberwolves fell to 1-4-0 on the season.
How it happened:
Heading into action on Friday, both UFV and UNBC had identical 1-3 records. The two young squads both came into the night feeling confident about their chances, and it was the visitors who drew first blood in the 16
th minute.
Hinsche had trouble corralling a UFV cross, and the rebound ended up right on the feet of
Jaya Bains. The first-year Surrey product made no mistake in close, lifting the Cascades up 1-0.
With time winding down, the Timberwolves had one last 'Grade A' chance on the UFV goal when a mad scramble in front of Madec bounced to UNBC's Claire Turner. But the first-year keeper managed to dive on top of the loose ball before Turner could get her foot on it, and the game remained in favour of the Cascades until the final horn sounded.
Through 90-plus minutes, Cascades outshot the Timberwolves 14-5.
Notable:
The victory was the Cascades first road win of the season.
The result goes down as Madec's first career win and first career shutout.
Bains' 16th minute goal was the first of her career.
Quotable
Cascades third-year player Camryn Lyon spoke pregame on Friday:
"It's been a really important week of training, working on our shape and togetherness. We are a young team so it's important for us to have a really good team dynamic so far."
"[UNBC] is just like us, they're a hardworking team and we have to match them today. If they are going to go in hard we have to go in ten times harder."
