Vancouver, BC – The young UFV Cascades squad battled hard, but in the end the nation's top-ranked team, the UBC Thunderbirds, came out on top 3-0 on Sunday afternoon.
The Cascades record drops to 2-4 on the season, while the Thunderbirds improve to 6-0-0.
How it happened:
Jade Taylor-Ryan was denied by a good stop from Cascades keeper
Alana Madec in the 15th minute, with UFV responding with a dipping effort from
Emerson Toop five minutes later.
UBC came within inches of taking the lead in the 21st minute, but Taiya Dennehy's fierce strike crashed off the crossbar from just inside the box.
The breakthrough finally came in the 36th minute and it took a special goal to get it, with Holly Whelan's in-swinging corner evading the hands of Madec and finding the back of the Cascades net.
UBC doubled their advantage nine minutes into the second half. Olivia Gomez sent the ball up the wing for Bailey Doerksen, who cut it back beautifully for Sofia Peckenpaugh. The rookie's first-time shot was on target, but
Kenzie Fitzgerald's clearance attempt was only able to slice the ball into her own net while trying to clear the danger.
Zoe Black fired wide for the Cascades in the 86th minute, before Taylor-Ryan removed any question of a UFV fightback in the 89th minute, when Doerksen ran onto an excellent through ball before rounding the keeper and centring it for the Taylor-Ryan to tap in her first of the season and seal the 3-0 victory.
Quotable:
UFV head coach Ari Adams
"The team stepped up today and put in a gritty performance. They were defensively compact and made it difficult for UBC to break down."
"Although we were missing two key starters,
Jaya Bains and
Kiana Langston, many of our up and coming young players really stepped up and showed they can compete against top teams."
