Calgary, AB – The UFV Cascades found themselves behind early, and were unable to overcome the slow start as they fell 5-0 to the Calgary Dinos on Sunday in. Calgary.Â
The Cascades record moves to 5-3-2 on the season, while the Dinos improve to 5-1-3.
How it happened:
The Cascades struggled to deal with a long ball forward in the sixth minute, and Owen Antoniuk jumped on the error to open the scoring. Just five minutes later, a cross found the head of Efe Udolu-Joshua who put the Dinos up two.
The Dinos continued to take advantage, as an Antoniuk corner was mishandled in the 18
th minute and it found its way into the goal. Antoniuk completed the first half hattrick in the 31
st, as he cut inside from the left and side-footed the shot into the goal.
The Cascades came out stronger in the second half to create multiple chances, but were unable to find the back of the net. The Dinos finished off their afternoon, as Dominic Anamali got on the end of a free kick to make it 5-0 in the 81
st minute.Â
Quotable:
UFV head coach Tom Lowndes
"Bad day at the office. A terrible first half. We've come out slow and conceded a bad goal early on and then we have kind've crumbled a little bit, not rebounded, and conceded more poor goals. Credit to Calgary, they played the conditions perfectly and executed on set pieces and for 45 minutes there it was men versus boys."
"We have taken the lead in every game, so this is the first it of adversity of coming from behind. We need to find a way of bouncing back and being better when we go down, but the nature of the goals isn't great. There are two or three individual errors on three of the goals."
"I thought second half we were a lot better, we showed some fight. I thought
Dante Colebourne came on and put a real positive performance in, same with
Ebi Igali, and
Michael Beecroft gave us some energy. So there were positives to take from the second half, but we obviously can't be putting ourselves in that situation because it will cost us a lot of points."
"We did well to keep our heads in the second half. We could have lost our discipline, and lost our way a bit, but I thought we went about it quite professionally and created some chances. It was just obviously not our day today and we will use the bye-week to rebound, rest, get healthy, and be ready to attack these last six games."
Next Up:
The Cascades now have a chance to regroup with the bye week next week, before returning home for a pair of big divisional matchups with Thompson Rivers on October 4, and UBC Okanagan on October 6. The games can be seen live at Rotary Stadium, and can also be streamed live on canadawest.tv.
