WVB: Attieh leads Cascades to eighth consecutive win

Lauren Attieh knocked home a match-high 20 kills with a .350 hitting percentage in a four-set victory (25-18, 22-25, 25-22, 25-14) over the Brandon University Bobcats on Friday night.

The visiting Cascades improve to 12-1 on the season with the win and take control of the top spot in Canada West, while the Bobcats fall to 1-12 on the year.

How it happened:
Consecutive kills in the opening set from Lauren Attieh made it 17-10 for UFV, before the Cascades found two more kills and an ace to stretch the advantage to 20-11. After a small push from Brandon, a block from Sydney Wright, and a Lauren Attieh kill capped off the set 25-18.

The teams traded blows in the second, but with the Cascades up 18-17, the Bobcats found three kills in a row to take the lead and Megan Pickford gave the hosts the late push with a block and a kill to even the match at one apiece.

Brandon jumped out early to an 8-4 lead with the momentum, but UFV would come back with a couple of scoring runs, including four kills in five points by Talia Attieh, to give UFV a 19-17 lead. The Cascades would ride out the rest of the set from there with Sydney Wright capping it off with a kill.

Lauren and Talia Attieh combined for six kills on the first nine points of the fourth set to give UFV a 7-2 advantage, before the Cascades extended the lead to 19-9, and eventually closed it out 25-14.

Notable:
Lauren Attieh led the match with 20 kills on 40 swings, while Talia Attieh added 14 kills, and Mandi Feist had 11. Emily Matsui chipped in 14 digs for UFV and setter Cailin Bitter finished with 42 assists.

The Cascades now sit first in the conference, as they hold the tiebreaker currently over UBC (12-1).

Quotable:
UFV head coach Janelle Rozema

"We played through some fatigue tonight, and it impacted our serve and pass game. We have some urgency that we have to be better at those two skills tomorrow night. However, I am happy with how the team still rallied to find the performance despite it not being our best ball control match."

Up Next:
The two teams will battle again on Saturday, with the first serve set for 4:45pm PT on Canada West TV.
