Abbotsford, BC – The UFV Cascades had the bulk of the chances but were unable to find a decisive moment, as they played to a 0-0 draw on the road against the Trinity Western Spartans on Saturday evening.
The shutout was UFV's sixth of the season, as first-year goalkeeper
Matheus De Souza set a new single-season program record for clean sheets surpassing the previous mark held by
Jackson Cowx and Alex Skrzeta.
The result moves the Cascades record to 6-3-4 on the season, while TWU goes to 4-6-3.
How it Happened:
A strong run from
Kevin Mailand in the 38
th minute, saw him play a one-two with
Michael Beecroft to get some space, but Mailand's shot was blocked away by a Spartan defender. The resulting corner kick found the head of
Carson Muter, but his header took a wild bounce off the ground and popped just over the bar.
Beecroft got on the end of a freekick from
Beckham Hatch in the 68
th minute, but much like Muter's earlier chance his header was driven into the ground before bouncing safely over the crossbar.
A
Mateo Brazinha cross rolled across the six-yard box in the 82
nd minute, but it ended up just out of reach of a sliding Mailand, and rolled harmlessly out the other side.
The Spartans first real chance of the game came in the 92
nd minute, as Grant Verhoeven picked up a loose ball and drove into the right side of the UFV box, but his powerful shot sailed high over the net.
Quotable:
UFV goalkeeper
Matheus De Souza
"It feels really good. Worked hard for it. The last couple of games haven't really gone our way, especially last night where we lost, but we came out today and fought and maybe deserved a bit more out of the game. I feel like we played really solid at the back and you know it's a good feeling to get the record and keep clean sheets."
UFV head coach
Tom Lowndes
"I think one of our biggest strengths in this squad is depth. When a guy is injured or suspended, we have others ready to step up and take the spot. It was a bit of a makeshift back line tonight, but I thought they were excellent. All the players did really well, especially the young guys."
"Really happy for [De Souza] to get the clean sheet. He deserves it. He's got good mental toughness to bounce back. I thought it was great, he was good on corners today, set pieces, commanded his box. He didn't have a lot of shot stopping to do today, but he helped calm us down in the last minute."
