Abbotsford, BC – The UFV Cascades will feel unlucky to come away without a goal on Sunday, as they produced a number of good chances, but in the end the U SPORTS No. 1 ranked UBC Thunderbirds came away with a 1-0 victory to stay undefeated on the year.
The win moves the Thunderbirds to 12-0-0 on the season, while UFV drops to 3-7-2.
How it Happened:
The run of play switched from UBC to UFV in the early portion of the match, and as the Cascades pushed numbers forward the Thunderbirds found a moment to strike. A quick counter saw them cover the length of the field in three passes as Maddy Norman finished it past an onrushing goalkeeper to make it 1-0 UBC.
The Cascades responded strongly, carrying much of the play in the second half, and were almost rewarded in the 53
rd minute when a
Jaidyn Jackson corner kick connected with
Emma Olson in the box, but UBC's Emma Sparrow was on the scene to smother the chance.
After another UFV corner the ball popped out to rookie
Kyla Kerr who fired a shot from distance, but Sparrow was there again to make a diving save for UBC.
A Cascades cross fell to
Zoe Black in the 73
rd minute, but she was unable to keep her shot on target and it sailed just wide of the post.
UBC's Holly Whelan struck the post in the 79
th minute, but Cascades defender Jenna Ericsson was first on scene to clear it off the line and keep it 1-0.
Notable:
The Cascades honoured a pair of players in a pregame ceremony, as both Kiana Langston and Sam Phunal played in what could be their last home game for UFV on senior day.
Quotable:
UFV forward
Kiana Langston
"I think going from Friday night playing Victoria, and not having that push or that determination to be first to all the balls, I think that kind've got us a little fired up. I think we have been playing so good, and that was a little step back, but I think we're in the right direction and going into next week I'm confident that if we play like we did today we'll have success."
UFV midfielder
Sam Phunal
"It's super motivating, the way the team came together. We were fighting for each other in this game, and the energy in the change room and the energy Ari [Adams] brought, everyone knew their role today. Regardless of what the score was, we all put in a shift and it was just super rewarding seeing everyone fighting to the last whistle. Yes, we could have had a goal, but at the end of the day, taking a top-10 team in the country to 1-0 is a big accomplishment."
Next Up:
The Cascades close out their regular season next week with a pair of games in Langley against the Trinity Western Spartans. The games are set to kickoff at 6pm on Friday and Saturday, and can also be seen live on canadawest.tv.
