The UFV Cascades golf teams got a pair of top-10 individual finishes at the Canada West Golf Championships on Tuesday at the Chilliwack Golf Club, as the men captured a 5
th place finish and the women's squad ended the event in 6
th place overall.
Hamade, playing in her fifth and final Canada West Championship, posted her best-career finish at the event in a tie for sixth place, posting rounds of 74 and 73 to lead UFV at +3. First year golfers
Gabriella Gobbato (+28),
Maya Gidda (+33), and
Alexandra Ellison (+53) rounded out the UFV participants.
"It feels awesome that I was able to perform that way considering it's my last Canada West event," Hamade noted after the final round. "I've been putting in a ton of work recently, and it's good to see it kind of pay off."
"It's just been a great time with the girls and I couldn't have asked for a better two days."
Following up on his opening round 68,
Hayden Lazeo posted a second round 69 (-3) to lead the way for the men's squad. Lazeo closed out the event just three strokes back from the lead in a tie for sixth place, while
Brett Bateman and
Andrew Biggar each finished tied for 21
st at +2.
Hayden Prive finished the event at +5, and Connely Parker posted a second round at even par to close out the Cascades men's results at +7.
Lazeo carded just a single bogey in Tuesday's final round, as he noted that was a bit more special in a tournament setting.
"It was my first almost bogey free round in a tournament, and it definitely helped to have Eli [Greene] on my side. I was definitely nervous on the last couple of holes, but overall I think I handled myself pretty well so I'm happy about that."
"I fought through some mental struggles early in both rounds, but I'm pretty happy with how I controlled my emotions and got it done both days. Hopefully we get into nationals, and I'll be able to carry that into the spring season.
Hamade and Lazeo were both named conference Second-Team All-Stars for their performances at the event.
