Cascades take opening set but fall to Heat in four

Abbotsford, BC – After a strong start, the UFV Cascades ultimately came up short dropping a four-set contest to the UBC Okanagan Heat on Friday at the UFV Athletic Centre.

The Cascades record drops to 0-7 with the result, while UBCO improves to 6-1 on the year.

How it happened:
The opening set was tightly contested, with both teams trading kills to find themselves tied at 23. However, UFV's Hudson Brandsma found a kill to give UFV a set point, and a block from Tucker Cacic closed out the Cascades first set win of the season.

The teams would trade blows throughout the second to see it tied up at 21, but this time it was the Heat getting the upper hand with the next four points to take it.

A Roan McCarthy kill fended off a set point and tied the third set up at 24, but that was as close as UFV would get as a kill from Xander Van Driel was followed up by a Lucas Woelders ace to finish the frame.

The Heat would carry that momentum into a 14-6 lead in the fourth as they went on to take the match with a 25-18 set win.

Notable:
UBCO's Van Driel led the match with 17 kills, while Seba Manuel added 14.

McCarthy led the way for UFV, picking up 14 kills and a pair of aces, while Easton Sarich chipped in 14 of his own.

Up next:
The Cascades and Heat meet up again for the rematch on Saturday at 4pm. The match can also be seen live on Canada West TV.
