Abbotsford, BC – A pair of early saves by
Alana Madec set the tone, as the UFV Cascades picked up a big point on the road in a 0-0 draw with the Victoria Vikes on Sunday afternoon.
The Cascades move to 2-4-1 with the result, while Victoria goes to 2-2-2 on the season.
How it happened:
Alana Madec came up big for the Cascades in the early stages, as she made a great diving stop on Sophie Murphy in the sixth minute. Madec stepped up again on the ensuing corner, tipping a powerful header from Taiya Scorey off the cross bar to keep the game level.
It was a low event second half as well, with both teams finding half chances. The Cascades saw their best opportunity, a free kick from
Camryn Lyon, stopped by McKenna Jaime in the 55th minute.
The Vikes had one last chance to find a winner late in the 87th minute. Madec pushed away an attempted cross and the ball fell to the feet of Ruby Nicholas. A great tackle from
Sarah Belcher made the shot difficult and Madec was able to dive to her right and smother the danger.
Notable:
Madec made six saves in the performance to help earn UFV their first road point of the year, while Jaime made one save in the Vikes net.
The clean sheet is the second of the season for UFV, and the first for Madec on the year.
Quotable:
UFV head coach Ari Adams
"Alana [Madec] came up with a few vital saves early in the game to keep us in it. After we settled in, we made it really difficult for UVIC to have many direct opportunities on net. The entire team put in a gutsy performance, getting stuck into tackles and blocking shots."
Next Up:
The Cascades now get set for a single game next week as they host their local rivals from Trinity Western on Friday at 7pm. The game can be seen live at Rotary Stadium, or streamed on Canada West TV.
