WSOC: Langston’s first half goal not enough as Cascades fall to Spartans

Abbotsford, BC – Kiana Langston scored in the first half to give the UFV Cascades a lead, but a pair of goals from the visiting Trinity Western Spartans saw them come back to take the match 2-1 on Friday.

The result sees the Cascades drop to 2-5-1 on the season, while the U SPORTS No. 10 ranked Spartans improve to 4-2.

How it Happened:
The Cascades looked to be the stronger team through much of the first half, generating a number of early chances, and they would find the breakthrough in the 36th minute off the left foot of Langston. A cross field ball from Jaidyn Jackson found it's way to Langston at the top of the box, and her first-time shot took a slight deflection off a TWU defender before looping over the goalkeeper and finding the back of the net.

TWU's Sophie Crowther tested UFV goalkeeper Alana Madec in the 43rd minute, as her powerful shot from distance forced a nice diving save. However, Crowther found her moment just minutes later. A TWU ball forward bounced off a UFV defender before Kylie Hendricks found Crowther in the box and her shot found the top right corner to tie it up at one just before the half.

The Spartans found the lead in the 73rd minute, as Erin Stewart played Mansha Sidhu through on goal and she made no mistake to bury the eventual winner.

Notable:
Langston's goal was her team-leading third of the season. It was also her 11th career Canada West regular season goal, moving her into a tie for 11th in the program's record books.

Quotable:
Cascades forward Kiana Langston

"I think coming into this game we knew we just had to leave it all out there, and coming off a good weekend with UVIC, our mindset was just to go as hard as we could for 90 minutes and push for a good result. I think despite the score, the game was in our hands, and we fought really hard so I'm proud of the girls for that."

"I think I play my best games when I want to score and I really feel capable of it. Getting in that mindset is really important for me, and I think when I do score, or when anyone does it just brings the whole spirit up."

Next Up:
The Cascades are back at home next week to take on the UBC Okanagan Heat on Friday, and the TRU WolfPack on Saturday. Both games can be seen live at Rotary Stadium at 7pm, or streamed on Canada West TV.
