Prince George, BC - First half goals from
Kevin Mailand and
Mateo Brazinha led the UFV Cascades to a 2-1 victory, and a weekend sweep, against the UNBC Timberwolves on Saturday at Masich Place Stadium in Prince George.
The Cascades win improves their record to 6-1-2 on the season, while UNBC falls to 3-6-2.
How it Happened:
The Cascades came out firing early, with
Michael Beecroft finding a shot in the opening minute, and
Mateo Brazinha putting a strong header on target in the second minute, but both chances were turned away by UNBC goalkeeper Yanni Ntapas.
UFV found the opening goal in the 13
th minute. Beecroft picked the ball up in his own end before driving into the UNBC penalty area and firing a shot low. His shot was parried by Ntapas, but it fell directly to the foot of
Kevin Mailand who smashed it home.
The Cascades kept the pressure on, as Joven Sidhu dispossessed a UNBC defender at midfield in the 31
stminute. After beating a defender, Sidhu fired off a shot that was only partially saved, but UNBC's Hagon Kim charged back to clear the rolling ball off the goal line.
UFV doubled their lead in the 37
th minute, as a sparkling run from
Dylan Lee saw the midfielder get around his man before finding Brazinha in the centre of the box. The striker took a touch before calmly placing his shot into the left side of net to make it 2-0.
The visitors looked to add another in the 59
th, but after a scramble in the box,
Bhagvir Sidhu's close range shot was stopped by a strong hand from Ntapas.
The Timberwolves pulled one back in the 70
th minute, as Josh Jordan dispossessed UFV's
Adam Szymanski before breaking in alone on goal and sliding his shot past an onrushing
Matheus De Souza.
A long range attempt by Kim forced a good diving save from De Souza in the 85
th minute to clear the danger and see the result through for UFV.
Notable:
The win extends the Cascades undefeated streak to eight games, equaling the program's best run from the 2021-22 season.
With his opening goal, Mailand moves to five goals on the season, tying him for fourth in the conference with Beecroft.
Brazinha's goal puts him alone on top of the conference's goal scoring leaderboard, with 10 goals in eight games this season.
Brazinha (12), Beecroft(8), and Mailand (7) currently sit second, third, and fifth respectively in conference points.
First-year goalkeeper Matheus De Souza currently leads canada west goalkeepers in save percentage (.837), while sitting second in goals against average (0.78), and fourth in saves (36).
Quotable:
Cascades head coach
Tom Lowndes
"Obviously this is a tough place to come and get six points, so we're delighted it keeps us rolling. I thought we caused them real problems on the counter attack, and looked menacing offensively and disciplined defensively. We have had a lapse in concentration that allowed them to score, but then I was really happy with how we buckled down to see it out."
Next Up:
The Cascades return home next week to take on the Victoria Vikes on Friday at 7pm, before taking on the UBC Thunderbirds on Sunday at 1pm. Both games will be played at Rotary Stadium, while the games can also be streamed live on Canada West TV.
