Abbotsford, BC – The UFV Cascades fell in three sets (17-25, 15-25, 20-25) to the U SPORTS No. 1 ranked UBC Thunderbirds for the second consecutive game on Saturday at the UFV Athletic Centre.
The result sees UFV fall to 0-18 on the year, while UBC improves to 17-1.
How it Happened:
An Alex Borowski ace capped off some early strong play from the nation's top ranked team, as UBC grabbed a 14-7 lead. They pushed that advantage to 11 after a Reeve Gingera ace made it 22-11, and despite a late push from UFV that included an ace from
Tucker Cacic, and a kill from
Hudson Brandsma the set would end 25-17.
UBC continued their strong play in the second set, hitting .625 as a team in the frame to claim it 25-15.
The Thunderbirds snagged an early 22-13 lead in the third, but a strong push back from UFV included kills from
Comrie Engbers and
Silas Van Huizen to pull back within five. Ultimately, UBC proved too much as they closed out the set 25-20 to take the match.
Notable:
Roan McCarthy led the Cascades with seven kills, while
Hudson Brandsma added six on the night.
Reeve Gingera had nine kills for UBC, and Kieran Robinson-Dunning had six.
Up next:
The Cascades will close out their regular season next week at home against the University of Manitoba Bisons. Matches are set for Friday and Saturday at the UFV Athletic Centre. Saturday's match will also include a ceremony celebrating a number of graduating senior players from UFV.
