Edmonton, AB: Second half goals from
Kevin Mailand and
Michael Beecroft just a minute and a half apart proved decisive on Sunday as the UFV Cascades men's soccer team came from behind to pick up a 3-2 victory over the MacEwan University Griffins. The win brings UFV to 5-3-2 on the season, while MacEwan falls to 0-7-1 in the campaign.
How it happened :
MacEwan Sacre Musa opened up the scoring in the 14th minute, when he received a through ball from Adam Dasouki and calmly finished it into the corner of the UFV goal.
The Griffins would see their lead vanish in the 40th minute. A MacEwan defender played a pass back towards goalkeeper David Sithole, and unfortunately for the hosts he would be unable to control it and was forced to watch as it trickled into the net for an own goal. However, moments later MacEwan would recover as Dasouki once again provided a fantastic ball forward and Macky Mahfouz took full advantage touching around UFV goalkeeper
Matheus De Souza before sliding it into the open goal.
The Cascades pushed hard for an equalizer through teh start of the second half, but it would be
Kevin Mailand in the right place at the right time to tie it up in the 74th minute. UFV's
Mateo Brazinha found some open space at the edge of teh box and he unleashed a vicious shot that Sithole was only able to tip off the crossbar before it fell to the waiting boot of Mailand to tap it in and make it 2-2.
UFV would not be content there, as just a minute and a half later, a cross from
Marcus D'Andrea would find teh head of Beecroft who guided it on target. His header would be saved, but the rebound came right back to him and he would make no mistake potting his fourth goal of the season to give his team a lead they would not relinquish.
Notable :
Beecroft now leads the Cascades with four goals on the season.
The Cascades have now won four of their last five matches, with the lone blemish in that stretch being the draw on Friday night with Lethbridge.

""I thought we controlled the game, but two poor moments allowed them to score in the first half. We created good chances in the first half but didn't finish them. We talked at half time about pushing the tempo and making them defend us for long periods second half and that's exactly what the lads did. We didn't really allow them to get out of their half and we took our opportunities when they came, and we were unlucky not to get a couple more goals to make it more comfortable, but overall really happy with the boys this weekend. The amount of travel on this swing trip is gruelling physically on the boys, but we will take the 4 points and get ready for a tough weekend at home next week."
