Arabsky named PACWEST athlete of week, team cracks national rankings

The University of the Fraser Valley women's volleyball program collected a pair of impressive accolades on Tuesday.

Error-free Arabsky voted PACWEST athlete of the week

At the conference level, Sedona Arabsky was selected as the PACWEST women's volleyball athlete of the week after helping the Cascades to a weekend sweep of the College of the Rockies Avalanche.

The sophomore midde from Surrey, B.C. was literally flawless in her attacking play all weekend, with zero hitting errors over the two games. On Saturday, she had eight kills on 10 swings for an .800 hitting percentage, to go with one service ace and five digs. On Sunday, she racked up nine kills on 13 swings for a .692 hitting percentage, adding four digs.

Arabsky and the Cascades are back in action this weekend, hosting the Camosun Chargers in a Friday-Saturday set at the Envision Financial Athletic Centre.

Cascades debut at No. 7 in CCAA rankings

The UFV women's volleyball team checks in at No. 7 in the first CCAA national rankings of the season.

The Cascades have had a solid start to the campaign, compiling a 4-2 record that's good for second place in the PACWEST. Both of their losses have come to the nation's No. 1-ranked team, the VIU Mariners.

Cascades head coach Janelle Rozema was quick to note that her team shouldn't get too caught up in national rankings, and indeed, there's little room for complacency this weekend with the CCAA No. 4-ranked Camosun Chargers coming to town.

"The national rankings are an honour, but beyond that, we have to take care of each opponent that's in front of us right now," Rozema said. "We're definitely on a mission not to lose our edge and work as hard as we can."
