On moving day, the University of the Fraser Valley men's golf team did just that.
The Cascades dominated the third of four rounds at the Canadian University/College Championships at FireRock Golf Club in Komoka, Ont. on Thursday, combining for a team score of eight under par. That was one of just three team scores in red numbers on the day, and left UFV four strokes clear of the second-best round of the day (UVic, -4).
When the dust had settled, the Cascades had rallied from sixth place to third overall. At -1 for the tourney, they're now within striking distance of the front-running Western Mustangs (-8) and second-place Victoria Vikes (-2) heading into Friday's fourth and final round. The UBC Thunderbirds and Laval Rouge et Or are also in the mix, tied for fourth at +1.
LIVE SCORING
"We've been playing well all week, we just got a few more bounces today than we've been getting," Cascades head coach
Chris Bertram analyzed.
"We had a good strategy coming in, and we played reasonably well the first two days. But we had a few bounces not go our way, and putts just weren't dropping. But today we started making some putts, and we got the type of result we've been expecting."
Each of UFV's top four players finished Thursday's round under par, led by
Daniel Campbell's three-under 69.
Wyatt Brook and
Kyle Claggett were both -2, and
Zach Olson was -1.
Ben Whiton finished at +7, but played the back nine in one under par and is trending in a positive direction going into the final round.
Brook (-2, T-9th), Claggett (E, T-14th), Olson (E, T-14th) and Campbell (+1, T-18th) are all among the top 20 individually through three rounds. Western's Charles Fitzsimmons (-7) is the individual leader.
"We knew we had work to do today, and the first step was going out and posting a good score, and we did that," Bertram said. "Then, we needed a bit of help from the teams in front of us, and we got that. So the confidence is high. Now we get to play in the final group with the leaders, and that's a much nicer place to be.
"We've got a group of players here who firmly believe we can go out and get it done."
On the women's side, UFV's Emery Bardock carded a 79 on Thursday and sits 15th in the individual standings at +20 heading to the final round.
