The University of the Fraser Valley men's golf team got its season started on a victorious note, winning The Collegiate Invitational in decisive fashion on Sunday in DuPont, Wash.
The 36-hole event, co-hosted by Pacific Lutheran University and Grays Harbor College at The Home Course, saw the Cascades roll to a 20-stroke triumph with four golfers finishing in the top 10 individually.
The UFV squad opened with a scorching collective score of -10 during Saturday's opening round, with four of five golfers –
Halen Davis,
Zach Olson,
Wyatt Brook and
Kyle Claggett – under par. That left them with an eight-stroke advantage over Grays Harbor heading into Sunday's final round, which saw the weather take a turn for the worst. The Cascades nevertheless extended their lead in the rain, finishing -3 for the day and -13 for the weekend as all of their competitors finished over par in terms of team scores on Sunday. Pacific Lutheran and Whitworth were the runners-up, tying for second at +7.
"We got off to a hot start yesterday and built a good lead which was nice," Cascades head coach
Chris Bertram noted. "Then when the weather came in today we just had to hang on. Really pleased with the result against some quality programs."
Senior
Halen Davis set the pace for the Cascades, firing matching rounds of 69 to finish at -6, good for a share of second place, two strokes back of individual winner Travis Bossio of Grays Harbor. Olson (68-73, T-4th), Brook (70-71, T-4th), Claggett (71-72, T-8th) and

"It's great to see Halen find some early-season form," Bertram enthused. "He's a big piece of the puzzle for us going forward."
