THE MATCH-UP
The Cascades have a challenge in front of them in the Canada West quarter-finals, as they face the two-time defending conference champions on their home court. The Dinos, ranked No. 4 in the nation, are just two years removed from winning the U SPORTS national title in 2018. The last head-to-head action between the two teams came during the 2018-19 season, with Calgary sweeping a weekend series in Abbotsford.
RECENT FORM
The Cascades are a cohesive group, and they're rolling – they've won 11 of their past 12 games, most recently
knocking off the Winnipeg Wesmen 92-84 in an overtime thriller in the first round of the playoffs. The Dinos are coming off a first-round bye. They looked invincible for much of the campaign, winning their first 16 games, but suffered their first two conference losses of the season, Jan. 30 and Feb. 1 at the hands of the Alberta Golden Bears. Calgary bounced back with a pair of wins over crosstown rival Mount Royal to wrap up the regular season.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Vick Toor, UFV – The third-year point guard from Kent, Wash. had a sensational performance last Friday vs. Winnipeg, racking up 19 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals to help spark the OT win. The
CW second star of the week was UFV's third-leading scorer during the regular season, averaging 10.1 points per game.
Brett Layton, Calgary – The 6'8" forward set a CW season record for rebounding average, hauling down 14.7 boards per game, and finished second in conference scoring (20.5) and first in both field goal percentage (64.3 per cent) and blocks (2.1).
QUOTABLE
"This whole week, Coach (
Adam Friesen) has been telling us just to play free. We don't have anything to lose. The atmosphere in practice is, we're making the most of our time together. The whole focus is playing free, playing together, having fun."
– UFV fifth-year centre Matt Cooley, on his team's mentality heading into the match-up with the Dinos
"We have a lot of momentum going into this next game. We buckled down and did what we needed to do to win (vs. Winnipeg), and Jordyn (Sekhon) hit that big shot. Being able to be a part of that game, from my perspective, was crazy."
– Cooley, on the momentum his team is carrying after winning their playoff opener
