The University of the Fraser Valley women's volleyball team achieved a milestone on Friday evening, earning their first preseason win against Canada West competition.
The Cascades, set to make their CW regular-season debut in November, knocked off a conference foe in the MacEwan Griffins in five sets at a preseason tournament hosted by Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, B.C. Match statistics were not available.
Afterward, UFV head coach
Janelle Rozema noted that while getting a win under their belts is nice, the Cascades know they are capable of playing better than they showed on Friday.
"Honestly, I think this has been the heaviest preseason our players have ever experienced," she said. "I believe they were fighting a little bit of fatigue during the match, and it was good to see some resilience. They were able to win even though they were fighting it a bit. They figured out a way to pull out a result."
Among the UFV standouts was rookie setter
Kinna Fisher, who did a great job distributing the ball and utilizing all of the attacking weapons at her disposal.
"It's good to break the ice and see that we can beat teams at this level, and it's a good message to send to the league – that they have to play good volleyball against us," Rozema noted.
The Cascades continue preseason tourney action in Kamloops with games vs. Mount Royal (Saturday, 3 p.m.) and Calgary (Sunday, 9 a.m.).
