The Cascades women's team was in action in Victoria this past weekend, posting a fourth-place finish at the Keg Spring Cup nonconference tournament.
The UFV side suffered a tough 2-1 defeat to the host UVic Vikes in the semifinals on Saturday – they carried the play for the most part and got a goal from
Harneet Dadrao late in the first half, but the Vikes took advantage of a pair of Cascade miscues to pot a couple goals of their own and advance to the final.
"That was a game where I walked away quite happy with the performance," UFV head coach
Niko Marcina said. "We were disappointed with the result, but we carried the play for much of the game. Credit to UVic, though – they play hard, and they never give up."
In Sunday's bronze medal match, the Cascades fell 4-1 to Trinity Western. The Spartans raced out to a 3-0 lead at the half, and while UFV asserted themselves and generated a goal from
Halle McCambley, they were unable to get any closer and TWU tacked on a goal in the dying minutes.Â
"I'm quite optimistic moving forward – we stuck with our playing style and philosophy throughout the weekend," Marcina said.Â
"We're going to clean up some defending on set pieces, and that will come with time. But from an offensive standpoint, I'm quite optimistic for the upcoming season. With the introduction of some of our recruits, I think we're in a good position."
Alanna Sydenham played every minute at centre back over the weekend and made strong contributions both offensively and defensively, and other UFV standouts included
Jessica Fennell at fullback, and McCambley and
Hannah Gamble in attacking roles.
