The University of the Fraser Valley men's soccer team took home some silverware over the weekend, as they won the annual Keg Cup tournament hosted by the University of Victoria Vikes each spring.
The Cascades and host Vikes battled in Saturday's opening game, but between a goal line clearance, and a shot that struck the bar, neither team was able to break the scoreless draw as the match went to penalties. From there, UFV keeper
Jackson Cowx stepped up to be the hero, as the fourth year netminder saved a pair of spot kicks and the Cascades won 4-1 on PK's to advance to Sunday's final.
Facing Trinity Western on Sunday, the Cascades struck early.
Roland Mansell found a goal in the seventh minute to put UFV in the lead, and after TWU levelled on a goal from Malcom Kengni,
Michael Beecroft put the Cascades back in the lead before the half. With 10 minutes left in the game Beecroft secured his brace and the Cascades second Keg Cup win in three years.
"I think this spring could go two ways, we could either feel sorry for ourselves -- carry on from the season and mope, or we could roll up our sleeves and get back to who we are. And we've done the latter," said UFV head coach
Tom Lowndes.
"The boys' buy-in and their work rate has been fantastic. We look like we are hard to play against. Like a team that is hungry and willing to put our bodies on the line and defend and do the things we need to do. We are facing teams that we are going to be facing in the season, and the fact that we are having success is a positive. We need to build on that now."
