The University of the Fraser Valley women's volleyball team improved to 2-0 at a preseason tournament in Kamloops, B.C., topping the Mount Royal Cougars in three straight sets on Saturday afternoon.
The Cascades, coming offÂ
a five-set victory over the MacEwan Griffins on Friday, prevailed by scores of 25-16, 25-22 and 25-21.Â
They wrap up the tourney, hosted by Thompson Rivers University, on Sunday morning vs. the Calgary Dinos (9 a.m.).
"Our execution was a lot cleaner today," said Cascades head coach
Janelle Rozema, who had felt her squad wasn't particularly sharp on Friday vs. MacEwan. "All-around, it was a better team atmosphere of competitiveness.
"We had a lot fewer unforced errors – moving more confidently and being more physical with our swings, rather than holding back and being tentative."
Left sides
Amanda Matsui (nine kills) and
Grace Warkentin (eight) led the way offensively, and right side
Sadie Wilson chipped in with five kills. Liberos
Stephanie Demeules and
Emily Matsui also excelled, giving the Cascades consistency on serve-receive and defence.
"We've had a lot of conversations about how every day we have to be better," Rozema noted. "For this weekend, we've been really intentional about nailing down what we have to be better at, and then putting a lot of emphasis on that. It's really paying off."
